It’s important that your children understand the basics of your home security system and home alarm system. They should know how and when to arm and disarm the home alarm security system, and what to do in the event of an emergency. Here are some tips for talking to your kids about home security and fire safety.
How to Use the Home Alarm System
If your kids enter and exit the home without adults present, they’ll need to know how to operate the home alarm system. Teach them how to arm and disarm the system, and what to do if they forget the passcode. Your kids should understand the purpose of your alarm system, what to do if the alarm sounds, what to say to the alarm monitoring company, and the importance of keeping the passcode confidential.
What to Do in the Event of a Burglary
If your children come home to find evidence of a break-in, they must know who to contact. If the alarm system goes off while they are home, they should know how to keep themselves safe. If it’s possible to safely evacuate the home without being detected by the burglar, your children should know where to go and who to contact.
How to Prevent Fires and Handle the Fire Alarm
Children should be taught how to prevent fires, and what constitutes a fire risk. Children should not play with matches or incendiary devices or substances without adult supervision. They also shouldn’t use the stove or grill without supervision unless they are old enough to do so safely. If the fire alarm goes off, children should know how to safely evacuate and contact the police and fire department.
